I had to learn how to be on time, which meant actually showing up early. And quite a bit early, at that. But on the rare event that I am late to something, the feeling is so familiar that it’s almost visceral.

Have you ever wonder why we it’s named “the living room?” The name came from the French, who decided it should be called that since the activities that happen in the room were lively. But what is a lively activity? One with many people, I suppose. A social gathering. How is this living in a different sense that when we’re alone, or mourning? Perhaps it’s the conversation, the exchange of stories, that constitute the idea of living.

What People Leave Behind

Most of the stuff that the previous owners of our house kept here has been moved out, with some tiny exceptions. You can see in some rooms the little bumps that the spackle left behind. There are also stickers that presumably never came off. There are a couple of kid-looking stickers still on the window and one on the stove. I’m guessing they were difficult to remove. But it makes me curious: why were these stickers used in the first place?

It’s interesting to me to watch people during this pandemic. Everyone’s coping methods are on full display whether they want them to be or not. One of those coping methods is one that I’ve witnessed for quite a while, which is giving advice on social media. Advice that doesn’t apply to everyone, even though the person posting wouldn’t believe that. There’s a lot of re-sharing on social media. And it’s nothing new.
